Their parking lot is a favorite for locals, it's a better place than most shopping centers for leaving a car for hours. Mt. Pleasant is a nice area. Personally, I would recommend venturing ~5-10 minutes further from downtown and staying in one of the beaches. Folly Beach or Sullivans Island being the closest.
