From your serial #and the features on it, according to my database, it's officially named ".38 Chiefs (plural but not possessive) Special" - Model of 1953 'New' J frame, and most likely shipped in Jan -Feb of 1959. It should be stamped Model 36 on the frame, seen with the Yoke opened and cyl swung out. So, it should have a Mod. 15-? stamp inside the yoke in front of the cylinder. If it is a CM, it will have either a 2" or 4" barrel with adjustable rear sight and ramped front sight. Its a S&W, 6 shot 22 LR revolver, the right side of the barrel reads "22 LONG RIFLE CTG." All the serial numbers on the underside of the barrel, bottom of hand grip, and backside of the cylinder all match. The SN is: K210537.The serial number (BAF2923) indicates this revolver was produced in 1988. The actual barrel length, as you noted, is 1 7/8". This was always identified as a 2" barrel by the company, and that is how it would referred to. I have a 65-4 and there is no serial number there, only on the butt. B.) The model 10-6 was the heavy barreled variant. As Injunbro said, the gun is from the 69-70 time period. Dolf, the number you are looking at is NOT the serial number, it's the factory assembly number, used to keep the major parts of the revolver together for final fitting. The correct serial number will be stamped on the butt of the revolver. You will have to remove the stocks to see it.
