Most main bosses require a higher level to get the real feel due to the scaling mechanic built in. I was around 150ish when I fought rykard. Praetor Rykard is a pretty easy boss, but you were also very overleveled for it. I'm well beyond Rykard and I'm level 148 right now.

Spamming colossal sword crouch poke is for sure more cringe than utilizing the whole great spear moveset, not questioning that.
