Missoula is prone to inversions during the winter - low clouds trapping in the cold. You can drive 10 miles south, into the Bitterroot, and be in sun and 10-15 degrees warmer temperatures. The combination of inversions and the low winter sun makes for a dark time, for some.
It’s got some darn good backcountry skiing. Check out missoulaavalanche.org for current skiing and avy conditions. Look at where other people are skiing and google how to get to those places. It took me a good solid 15 years of living there to get a good foundation of where to go. Of course snow conditions, road conditions, etc….

Hobby Lobby has similar corporate beliefs/structure and has done well in Bozeman. Different industries obviously, but. I imagine that another fast food esque restaurant will do well here so long as they can find workers. I personally have always found their chicken really dry, to the point of inedible. IMO the best resort skiing nearby is Lost Trail (best terrain, least crowded, cheapest). There's decent BC all over but it depends on how much you want to skin and whether or not you want sled access. Lolo Pass, the Bitterroots, The Missions, are all good options.
