I rubbed some oil on it, and got a mag. glass and saw the JM. Serial starts with 98 so I figure manufacture of 2002. My question is this , The "JM" stamp is crude compared to the older Marlins. The barell is New Haven Conn. I also have a XL7 30-06 serial # starts with 91 so it must have been built in 2009,it is also market with New Haven Conn on the barell. The stamp "JM", I assume, is about half there.

All guns made before 2010 have the JM, The JM stamp did not go with the equipment to Remington's factory so no Remington produced guns should have the JM. Unlike the crisp, clean stamp on my .444, the 1894 “stamp”, although it is the same size, looks like it may have been applied with a tool other than a stamp. It is rough, misaligned and the oval is incomplete and barely visible.

I've owned a Marlin for 40 years. My understanding is the JM stamp was the final approval for the quality of a Marlin produced gun before it shipped. JM are the initials of John Marlin, the founder. There was a period of time when Marlin outsourced some barrel manufacturing. These guns, assembled in North Haven Connecticut, will lack this mark.
