You can rent a car on St Thomas it St John. If you rent on St Thomas you take the car barge over. We do it this way. If you prefer to rent on St. John you take the passenger ferry over. The passenger ferry takes 15-ish minutes and the car barge takes 25-ish ( it’s just slower). The island is safe to explore on your own.
